Phased Array Feeds for Low Noise Reflector Antennas
نویسنده
چکیده
Phased array feeds offer the possibility of more efficient use of large radio astronomy reflector antennas by providing more closely spaced beams over a wide field of view and higher aperture efficiency in each beam than have been realized with horn feeds. Phased arrays have been used extensively in rapid scanning radars and shaped-beam satellite systems, but the array design criteria for low-noise radio astronomy antennas are markedly different, particularly as they affect array sampling density. Element spacing in the focal plane must be less than lA for large FID reflectors and less than about 0.7A for FID < 0.5. This rules out conventional horns as array elements and imposes a limit on the array bandwidth. The receive-only case of radio astronomy permit the use of a number of signal combining techniques that do not degrade system sensitivity. Problems of array weight optimization, mutual coupling, and correction of reflector errors are examined briefly in this paper.

Phased array ultrasonic imaging using an improved beamforming based total focusing method for non destructive test
One of the novel ultrasonic phased array based scanning methods for ultrasonic imaging in non-destructive test is total focusing method (TFM). This method employs maximum available information of the phased array elements and leads to an improved defect detection accuracy compared to conventional scanning methods. Despite its high detection accuracy, TFM behaves weak in distinguishing the real ...

متن کاملFocal-Plane Array Architectures: Horn Clusters vs. Phased-Array Techniques
The science goals of the SKA specify a field of view which is far greater than what current radio telescopes provide. Two possible feed architectures for reflector antennas are clusters of horns or phased-array feeds. This memo compares these two alternatives and finds that the beams produced by horn clusters fall short of fully sampling the sky and require interleaved pointings, whereas phased...

The two open-ended frontiers in radio astronomy instrumentation are collecting area and field of view. Greater collecting area translates directly into greater sensitivity while increased field of view increases observing efficiency and makes feasible new areas of science, such as searches for transient radio sources, rare types of pulsars, and surveys of large portions of our Galaxy and of the...
متن کاملDesign and Analysis of Low Frequency Strut-Straddling Feed Arrays for EVLA Reflector Antennas
A new feed system is designed for the Expanded Very Large Array (EVLA) for operation below 100 MHz. The only existing system on the EVLA operating below 100 MHz is the “4 m” (74 MHz) system which uses crossed half-wave dipoles located in front of the Cassegrain subreflector as the feed. However, the dipole feeds of this system introduce blockage, and a reduction in system sensitivity (estimated...
